Seeking Volunteers for the Scholarship Committee

As we continue our mission to serve the community and foster opportunities for growth, it’s time to start planning for this year’s scholarship program.

We are looking for club members who would like to serve on the Scholarship Committee. This is a meaningful opportunity to help select deserving students who align with our values and commitment to making a difference.

Serving on the committee will involve reviewing applications, participating in discussions, and helping make decisions about the recipients. It’s a rewarding way to connect with our local youth and invest in the future leaders of our community.
If you are interested or have any questions, please let me know by January 15th.  We would like to have our 1st committee meeting this Friday at noon.  Your involvement would make a significant impact, and I would be thrilled to have you on board!

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to the Rotary mission.

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Thomas “Tom” Fincham, who left this world on January 14, 2025, at the age of 68. Tom was born on August 21, 1956, in Kansas City, MO, to Gerald and Pauline Fincham. His father preceded him in death.Tom is survived by his wife, Katharine Fincham; Mother, Pauline Fincham; and his brother, Timothy Fincham and wife Brenda.

Tom graduated from Westport High School in 1975.  After high school he went on to graduate from UMKC with a bachelor’s degree in economics. He then obtained a law degree from UMKC and was admitted to the Missouri Bar in 1981. Tom served in private practice and also as a municipal judge for Oakview, Lawson, Richmond, Ferrelview, Riverside, and Platte Woods.   Tom was known for judging intelligently and fairly from the bench. He enjoyed participation in multiple Bar associations, and especially as a board member of the Missouri Municipal and Associate Circuit Judges Association.

In 2010 he became an Associate Judge for Platte County. He was then appointed Circuit Judge in 2013, and became Presiding Judge of the circuit court in January, 2020.  With the help of remarkable staff Tom successfully kept the courthouse open and safe throughout the pandemic.

He married the love of his life, Katharine Van Dyke, on May 31, 1986. They spent 38 wonderful years together.  During that time their families and friends enjoyed his excellent cooking, his interest in wine, and most of all his sense of humor.  He was a loving and devoted son.

When You’re Next To Me
When I’m standing next to you
There’s a song to sing , I know everything’s feeling right
When I’m standing next to you
Steeple bells ring only good things do I see
When you’re next to me
This love for you I’m feeling, has a power that is healing
It can mend the darkest hour with glorious light
When I’m standing next to you
I feel moonbeams burn, I see rainbows turning to gold
When I’m standing next to you
I hear Angels play, I see sweeter days, I see rivers win
Through the end of time
I see hatred fall from the highest hill
I see God’s good grace shining in your eyes, that’s what I see
When you’re next to me.

Former Rotarian Patrick Kelly

imageA Visitation was held from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m., Saturday, January 18, 2025 at Meyers Northland Chapel.  A Sharing of memories celebrating Pat’s life commenced at 11:30 a.m.  Military honors were presented under the auspices of the United States Air Force.  The family suggested Memorial contributions for Friends of Parkville Animal Shelter (F.O.P.A.S.).  Memories of Pat and condolences to the family may be shared at meyersfuneralchapel.com.

Patrick “Pat” Dale Kelly, 84, Weatherby Lake, MO passed away peacefully Sunday, January 5, 2025 at NorthCare Hospice with his loving family by his side.  Pat, a.k.a. “Dale” was born January 18, 1940 to Edward and Adelia (Anderson) Kelly in Brocket, North Dakota.

Pat grew up on a farm in North Dakota with his eight siblings.  After graduating from high school Pat enlisted in the United States Air Force for 3 years; where he was stationed in Germany from 1961- 1963.

Upon his return home to the US, Pat worked in construction, delivering paint and equipment to missile sites in North Dakota for a Kansas City painting company who asked him to move to Kansas City when the job was finished, which was in 1963.  He then moved to Parkville, MO in 1965 where he would settle down and start his family.  He worked for Davis Waterproofing for several years before starting his own business, Kelly Waterproofing, Inc. then Commercial Waterproofing, Inc. and was the owner-operator from 1974 to 2013.  He retired in 2013, turning the business over to his son, Tim,

After a brief retirement in 2013, he came out of retirement and his new business enterprise would be – as a partner in commercial real estate and continued working in commercial real estate until 2024.

Beyond his professional achievements, he enjoyed fishing trips with his brother John and son Tim multiple times throughout each year.  He traveled domestically and internationally with his wife Judy.  Their favorite journeys were to Germany and Ireland (where he reveled in his Irish heritage). His greatest joy in life was being a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather.

Pat contributed to his profession and community: serving on the Board of Directors for 1st National of Platte County and as a developer of the Bell Road Industrial Park.

Kind, caring, compassionate deeds have always been a constant with Pat and wife, Judy.  It was with their help and support, a vision of Friends of Parkville Animal Shelter (F.O.P.A.S) became a reality.  Numerous Northland families have adopted new canine/feline family members.  It was over 25 years ago, during the Croatian War, Pat and Judy worked with the Don Bosco Center to aid and support Croatian and Serbian families find peace, comfort, education and faith in mankind again.  Pat volunteered in numerous projects with the Parkville Rotary Club; the Parkville American Legion and several other non-profit organizations.

Pat is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Judith Kelly; a son, Tim Kelly; a daughter, Paula Davenport (Randy); a granddaughter, Kelly Roedder (Drew); a sister, Colleen Thompson; many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by both parents Edward and Adelia; six brothers and a sister.

Rotary Fact of the Week!

50 Things Every Rotarian Should Know about Rotary
by Steve Garret, District Governor 1994-95, District 5300

#24 - The District Assembly

In view of the annual turnover of Rotary leadership each year, special effort is required to provide the 27,000 club leaders with appropriate instruction for the tasks they will assume. The annual district assembly is the major leadership training event in each Rotary district of the world.

The district assembly offers motivation, inspiration, Rotary information and new ideas for club officers, directors and key committee chairmen of each club. Some of the most experienced district leaders conduct informative discussions on all phases of Rotary administration and service projects. The assembly gives all participants valuable new ideas to make their club more effective and interesting. Usually eight to ten delegates from each club are invited to attend the training session.

Another important feature of a district assembly is a review by the incoming district governor of the program theme and emphasis of the new RI president for the coming year. District goals and objects are also described and plans are developed for their implementation.

The success of each Rotary club is frequently determined by the club's full representation and participation in the annual district assembly.
