Shoes for Orphan Souls Drop Off

Kathy Leibrand, Bob Stone, Robert Kersey, and Lynn Fahy were present at the shoe drop-off in the old K-Mart parking lot at 72nd Street and I-29 recently. Our club has been participating in this donation event for many years.
Our District’s annual Buckner Shoes for Orphan Souls shoe drive led by our Shoes Cheerleader, Larry Lunsford, contributed a total collection this year 10,180 pairs of new shoes for vulnerable children.

The shoes and over 12,000 pairs of socks, were picked up by the Rotary District 6040 caravan and shipped to nonprofit Buckner International. More than $32,000 in cash donations were also received. The shoes will be sorted and distributed by Buckner to children in countries like Guatemala and Dominican Republic.

The shoes collected during the drive will provide hope for children living in orphanages and impoverished communities where Buckner International offers a variety of holistic services. Through foster care, empowerment programs, transitional care and humanitarian aid, Buckner International supports children and families in countries such as the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Kenya, Mexico and Peru.

About Buckner Shoes for Orphan Souls:
Buckner Shoes for Orphan Souls®, the largest humanitarian aid project of Buckner International, provides new shoes and socks to orphans and vulnerable children in the United States and throughout the world. Since 1999, Buckner Shoes has collected and distributed nearly 5 million pairs of new shoes, serving children in more than 80 countries. Thirty percent of the shoes benefit children living in the U.S.

Our District since Larry Lunsford started this in 2001 has collected $395,034 Shoes, 58, 310 Socks, 27,564 Laces and over $266,126.00 in funds. Thank you to all our Rotarians in District 6040 for your efforts this year and to Larry Lunsford for starting this great International Project for our District!

Donations Needed to Assist Turkey Victims of the Earthquake

The Parkville Rotary Club is teaming up with the Istanbul, Turkey Rotary Club to provide relief to Turkish victims of the devastating earthquake and aftershocks that struck southern Turkey (and Syria) in February. An estimated 50,000 were killed, and over 1.9 million displaced, according to World Vision. Food, shelter, and health care are a struggle. More than 350,000 pregnant women, for example, are struggling to access health care and daily essentials, according the UN.

Funds raised in Missouri will benefit the Istanbul Rotary Club’s Project Hope, which is providing housing (523 tents and a 120-family “container camp”); food and hygiene (2,300 boxes of 11kg food packages); health care (a mobile hospital to replace one that was destroyed); and education (two mobile education centers) for survivors.

Donations in any amount are desperately needed, and deeply appreciated. Steven Youngblood has organized this fundraiser.

Park Hill Community Alliance for Youth Coalition

The Parkville Rotary Club is invited to attend an event with the Park Hill School District because of our influence and concern for area families.

The coalition is hosting a Coffee with CAFY event hosted on May 19th from 9-10am at the Community Room in the Mid-Continent Public Library, Green Hills Road Branch. A formal invitation is attached in the link below.

You may have heard of CAFY before, but CAFY is a coalition made up of parents, community members, agencies and individuals who are concerned about the health and safety of youth within the community.   CAFY has been around for decades but as substance use and mental health needs rise among area youth, we are looking to increase the efforts and impact of our group.

You can RSVP by replying to Ashley, clicking on 'RSVP Here' below!  If you have any questions or want additional information, please reach out to Ashley!
