Ruthe Workcuff will be speaking with us on Friday about the RESPECT Institute in Missouri. RESPECT is a movement begun by the international consultant Joel Slack to help educate the public by telling his personal story of the powerful impact that respect and disrespect has on a person’s recovery from mental illness.
Slack developed the RESPECT Institute which began in December of 2000 at Fulton State Hospital. It was important that staff understand the effects of mental illness and the long road to recovery for the patients. RESPECT speakers offer insight into the ways general attitudes may affect the success or failure of the lives of people who face mental illnesses. The institute was started in the Kansas City area in 2010.
We help train speakers to share their personal stories of the ups and down of mental illness. We go to all types of venues so people can be aware of the struggles, and we hope to help decrease stigma of mental illness one story at a time. Please join us!

Save After Long Banning Polio Campaigns, Taliban Declares War on the Disease
ACHIN, Afghanistan — During its 20-year armed campaign, the Taliban repeatedly banned door-to-door immunization campaigns, helping to make Afghanistan one of only two countries where naturally acquired poliovirus is still endemic.
Two years after the Taliban took power, however, it has done an about-face, and its unexpected efforts may now represent the best shot in two decades at eradicating the highly transmissible, crippling children’s disease in Afghanistan.
Vaccinators in the country’s northeast, the center of the poliovirus outbreak, search cars for unvaccinated children at roadside checkpoints manned by Taliban soldiers. With no deadly attacks on public health campaigners reported in Afghanistan this year, they also feel increasingly comfortable venturing into remote virus hot spots that were previously far beyond their reach.
“We now have access all over the country,” said Hamid Jafari, director of the WHO’s regional polio eradication program.

Medical Update from Dave Overman:
I was released from home health care last week, which means a slightly longer leash and I can drive. I’ve developed a “work around” to closing driver side door (…no…it’s now tearing down the road w/ door wide open!!) so the missus doesn’t have to accompany me to my appointed rounds. And if I haven’t done so publicly, I freely confess that I am not a good passenger!
And yesterday, I started PT on my left shoulder (3 months and 6 days after my three point landing (head, right hip, and left shoulder) with the good folk at Pullem, Stretchem & Twist Rehab, LLC.
Living up to their name, they did indeed did some pullin’, stretchin,’ and twistin’ – all with only minor discomfort. I could’ve take an extra dose one treatment: Lying on my right side while therapist massaged my left shoulder/should blade – man, that felt good!
And while my shoulder is reminding me that I really hadn’t used it in over three months, I do have more movement – a small victory, but after as many orbits around the sun as I’ve had, that pretty dog-gone good!
