Our speaker will be Jeffery Rhoades who recently joined the team at City Hall as an Assistant to the City Administrator. Prior to that he spent 13 years with the Peace Corps in the wilds of Africa and Chicago. During that time he worked on projects with many organizations including Rotary.
Rebecca Kidwell spoke with our club this past year about Geeks for Kids. Their 2022 Season began Saturday, 8/28 and they are looking for volunteers to help build electric cars.
Give Kids with Movement Limitations the #Power2Play!
Each year, at Geeks for Kids, we build custom, electric cars for kids with movement disabilities. In the 2020 to 2021 build season, we got 37 kids racing. This year, we are stepping on the gas to get 50 more kids racing.
Join the campaign. It's easy! You can participate in a build event, refer a child, donate or sponsor. See the details at below.
The cars are a gift. There is no cost to the child or the family. Parents only need to apply, meet with us to discuss their child’s needs and send a family member to the Car Build event to help us fit the car to their child. Then, families join us on Car Delivery day to learn how to use the car and take it home.
Why It Matters
Our kids aren't just racing around and having fun - they are exploring, learning and growing in ways that they cannot easily do on their own. Play is, after all, the work of childhood. The freedom to explore independently is how kids come to understand themselves, their peers and their world.
Consider Anastasia. Her mom wrote, "She suffers waist-down mobility problems, but she loves all things that go fast - cars, bikes, you name it. She wants to go fast and independently. But, she has so few options. We had an adapted bike, but it was lost in a house fire last year. Then, we stumbled upon Geeks for Kids. This is incredible!!!" On Saturday, August 28th they started building Anastasia's car.
Volunteer Today
This year, we are hosting more events than ever - to build more cars than ever. Lend a hand, have a blast, and get fed. What's not to like about that?
Thank you to all those who participated in reading Book 1 - Leaders Eat Last by Simon Sinek. Book two will be Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss.
The goal of this group is to read a leadership or personal development type book & discuss with your fellow community leaders at Rotary. We will discuss for 10-15 minutes or so after the meeting on Friday, September 24th.
So come with ideas... No need to RSVP, we’re going to keep this very informal.
