Hurricane Relief thru Rotary

Parkville Rotary recently donated $300 to the hurricane fund below. We encourage Parkville Rotarians to donate as well if they are able.

Rotary Zones 30-31 | Heart of America

My dear fellow Rotarians,
Once again, our Rotary family and neighbors have been stricken by a natural disaster. As specific needs develop within our zone, we will communicate that information to you. You can also review the relief information that is posted on The Disaster Network of Assistance Rotary Action Group (DNA RAG) website.

I also want to bring to your attention a message from adjoining zones 33-34 that Director Patrick Eakes communicated. Please take the time to review and support.
We are not quite three months into the 2024-25 Rotary year, and a second devastating hurricane has caused widespread serious damage and loss of life in several of our districts, including those in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. The damage is massive and ongoing, and more than 60 people have lost their lives so far.

Our Communications Action Plan team has updated the disaster relief page <https://www.rizones33-34.org/disaster-relief/> on our zones' 33-34 website to include a donation link to support recovery efforts. This is the same page that we used for Hurricane Beryl. However, this time, we are directing donations to a bank account owned by our zones. Our Zones are recognized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which means that we operate as a recognized charity.

The eight districts in Florida have worked together effectively to address needs following two hurricanes in the last two years, and they have provided a powerful model that can be a starting point for us. Our plan is to collect donations through our website and assemble a team of experienced Rotary leaders to make recommendations about how to disperse the donations to create the maximum positive effect. We will also rely on Rotary leaders in the affected districts to determine the highest priorities in their areas and how to address them. Together, we will work to address as many needs as possible.

I encourage you to consider directing Rotarians, Rotary and Rotaract Clubs, and friends of Rotary to our disaster relief page <https://www.rizones33-34.org/disaster-relief/>. I have already done the same with an RI Director-Elect who inquired what his districts and clubs can do to support us.

I expect to have additional information for you in the coming days. Until then, I send my prayers to all of you whose districts have been affected by this storm.

Patrick

A second email from Greg Prymak to Bob Stone, dated 10/13/24:
Hi Bob,

I went to GA but when I arrived, I was reassigned to SC as we had a shortfall in leadership here. I'm working as the Disaster Recovery Center Group Supervisor.

We now have either 26 or 29 counties declared for Individual Assistance and over 300,000 registrations as of this morning. I've started opening Recovery Centers. We have three up and running with four more to come tomorrow and Tuesday. Our first Center in Greenville has already seen several hundred applicants during its first three days of operations.

The State of SC has been wonderful to work with and very appreciative of what our FEMA representatives are doing. The feeling is entirely mutual. Those folks are righteous.

We're short staffed due to having so many large disasters in such a short span of time. We're working 11 hour days, seven days a week. Our crews are powering through and doing a great job helping people get assistance with their needs. Don't believe what you may be hearing on social media. FEMA is out here giving our all to help our fellow Americans, and they are grateful for the support we can give them because of the generosity of the American people.

As always I'm doing my best to put the Four Way Test into practice in what I think, say, and do. I'm proud to be a Rotarian and to be supporting the FEMA mission here in SC.

My best to all of you back home in Parkville!

Greg

Rotary Fact of the Week!

50 Things Every Rotarian Should Know about Rotary
by Steve Garret, District Governor 1994-95, District 5300

#13 - The Classification Principle

Virtually all membership in Rotary was based upon a "classification." Basically a classification describes the distinct and recognized business or professional service which the Rotarian renders to society.

The principle of Rotary classification is somewhat more specific and precise. In determining the classification of a Rotarian it is necessary to look at the "principal or recognized business or professional activity of the firm, company or institution" with which an active member is connected or "that which covers his principal and recognized business or professional activity." It should be clearly understood that classifications are determined by activities or services to society rather than by the position held by a particular individual. In other words, if a person is the president of a bank, he or she is not classified as "bank president" but under the classification "banking."

It is the principal and recognized activity of a business or professional establishment or the individual's principal and recognized business or professional activity that determines the classification to be established and loaned to a qualified person. For example, the permanently employed electrical engineer, insurance adjuster, or business manager of a railroad company, mining company, manufacturing concern, hospital, clinic, etc., may be considered for membership as a representative of the particular work he or she may be doing personally or as a representative of the firm, company, or institution for which the professional service is being done.

The classification principle also permits business and industries to be separated into distinct functions such as manufacturing, distributing, retailing and servicing. Classifications may also be specified as distinct and independent divisions of a large corporation or university within the club's territory, such as a school of business or a school of engineering.

Though the classification principle is not as dominant as it once was it is still important that we make an effort to assure that each Rotary club represents a cross section of the business and professional service of the community.
