am ultra-proud to report that Rotary is playing a significant role in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic in numerous third-world countries.

Paralytic Polio was once feared as much or more so than COVID-19 is today, but is now reduced to a few cases in war-torn Afghanistan and Pakistan. Yet on-the-ground immunization teams are continuing their work in many parts of the world, maintaining the immunization levels of countries where Polio is still present, and completely eradicating it where it remains.

World Polio Day was Oct. 24, and is celebrated by more than 35,000 Rotary Clubs and their many partners around the world.

Partners include the World Health Organization, UNICIEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the health agencies of many nations.

Since 1988, more than a million Rotarians, including many in the Kansas City metro area have volunteered their time and/or resources to largely eliminate Polio.

UNICIEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore stated in the current issue of Rotary [magazine] that Rotarians should feel proud that the infrastructure we have in place for Polio is now being used against COVID-19.

In over 50 countries, Global Polio Eradication teams have temporarily shifted from chasing down the remaining cases to handling the COVID-19 crisis. Front-line teams have been doing the COVID-19 education, surveillance, quarantining, data collection, infection prevention measures and contact tracing.

At least 18,000 Global Polio Eradication team members, largely Rotarians, many from their own clubs in third-world countries, are playing a large role in supporting the COVID-19 response.

Parkville Rotary Club President Lee McLain said that he is very pleased that our club has worked with the Parkville city leaders in proclaiming Oct. 24 as World Polio Day.

Dr. Donald Breckon is president emeritus of Park University in Parkville.

Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI)

Rotary Leadership Institute is a leadership development program designed for those Rotarians who have the potential and willingness to engage in club leadership (not necessarily as club presidents) to provide them with a quality education in Rotary knowledge and leadership skills so important in voluntary organizations. The leadership skills you will develop at RLI will help you in your leadership efforts professionally and in other service organizations as well as in Rotary.
