Topic: ScrapsKC

ScrapsKC is Kansas City’s creative Reuse center and is the most exciting new non-profit concept seen in a long time.  ScrapsKC focuses on caring for our local environment, education and homeless; three large issues in our community that blend beautifully together!

ScrapsKC had already diverted over 12 tons of materials from the landfill by the time it launched in September 2016.  ScrapsKC knows there is more than one way to use an object. The ScrapsKC store is filled with unique and colorful materials just waiting to be creatively reused.

We believe that education reaches far beyond the classroom and new things can be learned everyday through experiences. We teach creativity by providing an unusual array of materials for children to interact with and share unique ways to creatively reuse scraps.  Learning how to serve the homeless and bringing our materials into your home, churches and classrooms are other ways for families to learn together.

ScrapsKC is honored to be able to provide opportunities for the homeless of Kansas City. We hope to grow our resources and support network to employ our homeless volunteers as soon as possible, and play a part in their renewal as they strive to be contributing members of our community.

Brenda Mott is the Executive Director of ScrapsKC. Brenda brings significant experience to ScrapsKC.  Prior to helping start ScrapsKC, Brenda was the Director of Children’s Ministries at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church.  She also founded Smart Mom University and was the Program Director of the Children’s Museum of KC.  Brenda graduated from Boston College and is an excellent Public Speaker.

Through the diversion of manufacturing waste Brenda and her team are able to provide teachers, artists and other creative minded individuals with unique and reusable materials that enhance the creative and educational processes.

What’s really cool is how ScrapsKC engages the manpower of our local homeless population to fulfill various jobs in our retail storefront. In return for their volunteer time we provide the homeless men and women with meals, health and survival items needed for daily living on the streets. It is our desire to one day be able to provide paid positions for the homeless.

The work that Brenda and her team do at ScrapsKC is saving lives and our community!
