Topic: St. Vincent De Paul Food Pantry at St. Therese
Through September 2021, the pantry had 28,605 bags of groceries given out. Those groceries went to 2,192 households, helping to feed 6,668 household members. In addition, $87,260+ has been paid out to help with housing needs, and $111,035 in utility assistance. We continue to see the need for financial assistance remaining strong, and even growing, as eviction moratoriums end, and other housing and utility assistance programs are discontinued.
Most of our funding comes from individual donations through the weekly collections, mail-in and online, and from memorial gifts. We use your gifts as wisely and efficiently as possible with 98.6% of our donations going to support clients and only 1.3% going toward general supplies needed to run the pantry.
We also receive hundreds of pounds of food donations from our benefactors - local grocery stores, businesses, restaurants as well as individuals. Through the Harvesters Food Bank, we purchase available food at a reduced cost of $.16/lb. Hy-Vee also allows us to purchase fresh produce at reduced prices so we can promote healthy, fresh fruits and vegetables to our clients. We are fortunate to have the Knights of Columbus, Parkville Rotary Club, the Altar & Rosary Society and the school at St. Therese Parish who provide support through special drives and programs throughout the year. The pantry is most blessed to have over 150 volunteers who help us run the pantry. 15-20 people are needed daily to keep the pantry and office operational. All give freely of their time and talents.
Information on the program speaker:
Steve Mercurio moved to Parkville in 2001 and is an active member of St. Therese Church. He volunteers two mornings a week at the pantry doing what's ever necessary to help serve the daily clients. His other job during the week is taking care of his customers' needs in commercial real estate.
Joe Carroll arranged for this program.

Kentucky Flood Relief: Call for Donations for Communities in Rotary District 6740
Dear Rotary Members in Zones 30 and 31,
Once again, #RotaryResponds where human needs are great. Last Thursday, flooding devastated three counties in eastern Kentucky in economically challenged communities. Twenty-six people have lost their lives and fatalities may rise as rescue efforts continue. People who had very little before the flooding are now left with nothing. Flooding in small communities in hollows in our own District 6740 has destroyed homes and livelihoods. Many people are without power or running water. This article from the New York Times only begins to describe the devastation and loss of life. Additional rains today, July 31, are adding to the suffering and complicating rescues efforts.
Rotary District Governor in 6740, Seema Sachdeva, the district leadership and Rotary clubs in the devastated communities are organized to accept donations to help these communities survive, recover and rebuild. At this time, cash donations are needed and are the preferred way for each of us to make a difference.
Please help the people of eastern Kentucky. The Pikeville, KY Rotary club will serve as the district’s point of contact for cash contributions to a 501(c) (3) fund, through an account with the Pikeville Community Foundation.
Cash contributions can be sent to the following address:
Pikeville Rotary Club Eastern Kentucky Disaster Relief Fund PO Box 988 Pikeville, KY 41502
Funds will be used for immediate disaster relief for the affected families. More information about relief efforts and needs will be communicated as it becomes available.
Please help out our communities and families that are in such desperate need in eastern Kentucky. Thank you for being a Rotarian, and thank you for your compassion.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Usovicz
Rotary International Director, Rotary Zones 30 and 31
