An Update on Our Global Grant in Puerto Rico

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

Greetings.

It is my pleasure to inform you that COPING Inc., our Global Grant partner, implemented the project of Culture Of  Peace In New Generations in Escuela Asunción Lugo in the Municipality of Yabucoa. The project began in the month of October 2020. As all of you know, this project is classified as a Peace and Conflict Rotary Foundation Global Grant Project (GG2094899),

The project was supposed to begin during the month of January 2020. However, it was delayed due to the following reasons:
  • Rotary Foundation required a more in depth explanation to clarify some doubts
  • a time lag in issuing Global Grant funds
  • COVID-19 pandemic paralyzed the world economy, leading to an early graduation of students and an indefinite closing (lockdown) of all public schools in Puerto Rico, until further notice.
  • The Secretary of Education announced that due to the pandemic, public schools would provide education online.
This pandemic presented an unexpected new reality which required adjustments in how to implement the project.

Hence, I met and discussed this situation with Dr. Wilfredo Colón Requejo, COPING'S President. We decided to make the necessary project adjustments to assure its feasibility.  Rotary Foundation approved them all.

Hence, various online meetings related to; implementation issues, teacher participation, training days, and project expectation results were held with the Director and teachers of Escuela Asunción Lugo during the month of September 2020.

On October 1, 2020 the first phase of teacher training sessions took-off. Teachers are trained in issues related to violence prevention, which are identified in the project's proposal.

The platform of Microsoft Teams is used and participating teachers meet every Friday morning from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. with Psychologist Dr. Yisa Marrero from COPING. Meetings are completely in Spanish.  Six (6) meetings have already taken place. The duration of the project will be one(1) year.

If you would like to attend a meeting, please let me know in order to have Dr. Wilfredo Colon facilitate you with the necessary link.

Feel free to write me if you have any other questions.

Kind Regards,
Armand Piqué
RC San Juan

Join the Plaza Rotary Club this Friday AM

Good Morning Rotarians!  We'll have an epic speaker this Friday discussing Rotary's efforts in the eradication of polio.  Dr. Tunji Funsho, who was recently listed on Time's most influential people, will be joining us.  Dr. Funsho spearheaded the polio efforts in Nigeria which resulted in the recent declaration that Africa was polio free.  Please join us if you have the time.  This upcoming Friday, November 20th.  Fellowship starts at 7:15 am, speaker generally starts at 8am, but we may start him earlier due to the topic.

November is Rotary Foundation Month

What are you doing to celebrate Rotary Foundation Month this month? What are you doing to celebrate the good we are doing around the world? One way to celebrate would be to contribute to Every Rotary Every Year (EREY)!

Our club goal has always been $100/member every year. We have met this goal many years. You can either mail a check to our club at: PO Box 12064, Parkville, MO 64152 or you can email Joe Carroll at JCarroll@wells-bank.com and have him put your $100 contribution on the 1st quarter invoice if you prefer.

Please remember though, no donation is too small and all donations are welcome.  Please make sure to tell Joe if you are making a donation to EREY so he can direct the money to the Rotary Foundation. All donations need to be turned in by May 31st, 2021 for this calendar year so Joe has enough time to get the funds to the Rotary Foundation.
