IN-PERSON MEETING @ NOON

TOPIC: Social Change Through Athletics: One Woman's Journey

Kristin Gillette will focus on an examination of social change through the lens of athletics and more specifically its impact on women.  She will also share insights on navigating the athletic landscape as a woman.

Ms. Gillette is entering her fourth year as Park Athletics Director of Athletics and joined the Pirates' staff in the Fall of 2021. She previously served as associate director of athletics/compliance at MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe, Kan.  Prior to moving to a university, she spent nine years at the NAIA in Kansas City, Mo., serving as the director of Champions of Character for six years and three years managing national championships. While at the NAIA, she created the Champions of Character Live 5 program, an online student-athlete NAIA core values (integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership) training. In addition, she worked with councils and committees focused on the health and well-being of student-athletes, while also working directly with student-athletes in various national programs.

Hi Bob!

Good to hear from you. No ice on the roads, but we just had a small
cold snap--65 degrees last night! Love it here, the people, the job.
Missing my family, which is not here yet because my mother in law has
been sick.

Still traveling--just back from Pakistan. See my blog for details:

Please give everyone my best, starting with your better half.

Best, Steven

Rotary Fact of the Week!

50 Things Every Rotarian Should Know about Rotary
by Steve Garret, District Governor 1994-95, District 5300

#27 EVERY ROTARIAN AN EXAMPLE TO YOUTH

In much of the official literature of Rotary International relating to service to young people, a special slogan will be found -"Every Rotarian an Example to Youth." These words were adopted in 1949 by the Rotary International Board of Directors as an expression of commitment to children and youth in each community in which Rotary clubs exist. Serving young people has long been an important part of the Rotary program.

Youth service projects take many forms around the world. Rotarians sponsor Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, athletic teams, handicapped children's centers, school safety patrols, summer camps, recreation areas, safe driving clinics, county fairs, child care centers and children's hospitals. Many clubs provide vocational counseling, establish youth employment program and promote use of The 4 -Way Test. Increasingly, drug and alcohol abuse prevention projects are being supported by Rotarians.

In every instance, Rotarians have an opportunity to be role model for the young men and women of their community. One learns to serve by observing others. As our youth grow to become adult leaders, it is hoped each will achieve that same desire and spirit to serve future generations of children and youth.

The slogan accepted over 40 years ago is just as vital today. It is a very thoughtful challenge, "Every Rotarian an Example to Youth."
