Farmer's Market Landscaping

Good morning.

Last fall Rotary had to defer planning volunteer landscaping in the handicap sidewalk area just south of Farmer's Market area due to a slightly extended construction cycle at Farmer's Market itself. It just got too cold to plant landscaping safely before the winter freeze  set in, and we agreed the project would be completed this Spring.

I am pleased to confirm that yesterday May 10th over 20 Rotary and community volunteers, with the much appreciated assistance and volunteers of Ryan Landscaping, completed the plantings per the approved rendering. Attached is a photo I took of the project yesterday afternoon.

Funding from the project came mostly from Parkville Rotary's annual flag subscription program, as well as a supplemental grant from Rotary District 6040.

Thank you all for your willingness to permit us to supplement on your behalf the landscaping in this area of English Landing Park

Thank You Parkville Rotarians!

Thank you to all of the Parkville Rotarians who came to honor Former First Lady Sandy Brecken and show support for Don Brecken last Tuesday as well as those who came to celebrate Comfort Field's 25 Year Anniversary.

From Don:
Being a member of Parkville Rotary for nearly 40 years was a highlight of my time at Park University.  It allowed me to make some of my best friends, to stay in touch with the community, and to be involved with  projects in the community, across the state and nation, and especially important for me, many international projects as well.  (I especially remember a water well project in the Congo and a school lunch project during a famine in Ruranda.}

When age and chronic diseases caught up with us, Sandy and I moved to Virginia Mn, to live with our daughter and son-in-law.  There used to be four Rotary Clubs in the area, but due to dwindling membership, they combined into one.  I attended three meetings, but found it did not meet my needs.  They kept all the projects of the previous clubs, but with only a dozen active members, spent meeting times as a "committee of the whole", planning the projects.  They rarely had programs or speakers or social hours.  Because of my mobility issues, I felt unable to participate in the projects, so I did not join. After Sandy's passing  I did get involved with some church group activities, but I missed Rotary, and a sense of belonging.

I decided to seek rejoining  Parkville Rotary, and was thrilled when the Club welcomed me back.  I will participate in EREY and as many other projects that are feasible for a remote member.

Finally, and the real purpose of this submission, is to say how apprecative I was to see so many Club members at the Park University Celebration of my wife Sandy's life.  It was a highlight of the day to see so many friends, and I thoroughly enjoyed visiting with so many fellow Rotarians.  Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!  That turnout was Rotary in action, and I will always be grateful.

As a small token of my appreciation, I will yet today send the Club  a $100 donation to Parkvue Rotary Charities.

Thank you my fellow Rotarians. Blessings and all good wishes.

Don Breckon

IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN! EREY!!!

If you would like Joe Carroll to add the $100 to your invoice please let him know ASAP. The end of the Rotary calendar year is coming to an end. Contact Joe at JCarroll@connections.bank.

EREY stands for "Every Rotarian, Every Year." It is a fundraising initiative by Rotary International (RI) designed to encourage every member to contribute to the Rotary Foundation annually.

The program is built on the philosophy that consistent, collective giving—even in small amounts—is what sustains Rotary’s global humanitarian projects.

Key Components of EREY

  • The Goal: To encourage every individual Rotarian to make a personal contribution to the Annual Fund every year.

  • Contribution Level: While there is no strictly mandated amount, many clubs suggest a minimum of $100 USD per year. However, any amount contributed to the Annual Fund qualifies a member as "EREY."

  • Impact: These funds support a wide range of activities, including:

    • District Grants (local community projects).

    • Global Grants (large-scale international scholarships and humanitarian projects).

    • Peace Fellowships.

Recognition and Awards

Rotary uses the EREY initiative to measure club engagement. There are specific banners and recognitions for clubs that achieve:

  1. 100% EREY Participation: Every active member contributes at least $25 to the Annual Fund.

  2. Every Rotarian, Every Year Club: Every active member contributes at least $100, and the club achieves an average of at least $100 per member.

Why it Matters

The Annual Fund operates on a three-year cycle. Money donated today is invested by the Foundation for three years; the interest earned covers the Foundation's administrative costs. After three years, the original principal is split, with 50% going back to the donor's local District (District Designated Fund) and 50% going to the World Fund. This ensures that the organization remains self-sustaining while maximizing the impact of every dollar.

SAVE THE DATE!
CHANGING OF THE GUARD CEREMONY

In June, our normal Rotary Third Thursday evening social will be held on the 2nd Thursday -- June 11th, 5:30 PM at Weatherby Lake, C Point Pavilion. This will include the annual "Changing of the Guard" ceremony, as our fiscal year ends June 30th. Typically the event winds down about sunset, and there may be other interesting lake orientated activities during this time period. More details as they become available.

We needed to move the date so we could get this high demand space reserved and confirmed for the Club. Mark Comfort made the arrangements for us this year (thank you). Please mark your calendar and save the date.

Start time is 5:30 PM, and we will have a picnic style barbeque and beverages available for all. The invite includes all spouses and guests, of course … and I do anticipate the cost per person will be in the range of $30-35 per person (a superb value for what you will be receiving). More info will be provided as we get closer to the date.

It has been a number of years since we have been to this location, and I know you all will have a great time.

Thanks all,

Dave Rittman
